Native to the Chris Hani District of the Eastern Cape, South Africa, it originates from grasslands with low-growing vegetation.

The specific epithet "gatbergensis" means "Hatberg" and is derived from Gatberg, where the type specimen was collected. Its Japanese name is "Shuranmaru" (鷲卵丸).

When the plant reaches a certain size, it produces yellow flowers from the tips of its branches. The flowers of Euphorbia gatbergensis have a very pleasant scent.
