The specific epithet "gatbergensis" means "Hatberg" and is derived from Gatberg, where the type specimen was collected. Its Japanese name is "Shūranmaru" (鷲卵丸), meaning "eagle's egg."

Once the plant reaches a certain size, it produces yellow flowers from its branch tips. The flowers of Euphorbia gatbergensis have a very pleasant scent.
