Native to the Chris Hani District Municipality in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, it originates from grasslands with dense low-growing vegetation.

The specific epithet "gatbergensis" means "Hattberg" and is derived from Gatberg, where the type specimen was collected. Its Japanese name is "Shūranmaru" (鷲卵丸).

When the plant reaches a certain size, yellow flowers bloom from the branch tips. The flowers of Euphorbia gatbergensis have a very pleasant scent.
