Native to the Chris Hani District of the Eastern Cape, South Africa, it originates from grasslands with dense, short vegetation.

The specific epithet "gatbergensis" means "Hatberg" and is derived from Gatberg, where the specimen was collected. Its Japanese name is "Shuranmaru" (鷲卵丸).

Once the plant reaches a certain size, it produces yellow flowers from the tips of its branches. The flowers of Euphorbia gatbergensis have a very pleasant scent.
