Native to the Chris Hani District of South Africa's Eastern Cape Province, it originates from grasslands with abundant low-growing plants.

The specific epithet "gatbergensis" means "Hatberg" and is derived from Hatberg (Gatberg), where the specimen plant was collected. Its Japanese name is "Shuranmaru" (鷲卵丸), meaning "eagle's egg sphere."

When the plant reaches a certain size, it produces yellow flowers from its branch tips. The flowers of Euphorbia gatbergensis have a very pleasant scent.
