Characteristics (Dragon Eyes)

  • Naming origin: Japanese collector Kenji Yoshino named it by likening its spines to the eyelashes of a divine dragon and its leaves to its eyes.
  • Juvenile stage: Sharply curved lateral spines, growing in a zigzag pattern.
  • Early sub-adult stage: Main spines grow long, and the white coating spreads.
  • Sub-adult stage:
Main spines: Thick and long, white coating extends significantly beyond the white coating of the lateral spines.
Lateral spines: Curve inward as they approach the growth point.
When viewed from above, the central spine is tilted, and it grows in a counter-clockwise spiral.
  • Diversity of lateral spines:
Growing upwards, downwards, wavy, curved, horizontally... there is no consistent pattern to their shape.
They show changes like rocks eroded by mountain weather and waves.
  • Leaf characteristics: Broad and round, thick, numerous and dense leaves, low center of gravity, radial growth.
  • Overall impression:
Main spines are robust and sharp, aggressive like the horns of a Triceratops.
Low-centered spherical shape, counter-clockwise spiral main spines, infinitely changing lateral spines.
Born at Stano.Lab, making it more unique and rare than commercially available Agave titanota 'Genryu'.

Cultivation tips

  • Sufficient light promotes the development of prominent main spines and white coating.
  • Since the shape of the lateral spines is inconsistent, strong individuality emerges depending on the growing environment, sunlight, and ventilation.
  • Its low center of gravity and spherical shape make it suitable if you want a compact appearance.
  • As it has many dense leaves, it is important to ensure good ventilation to prevent stuffiness.
  • Highly rare and ideal for ornamental purposes to enjoy the changing forms.
