Ask for "gauze fabric" at a fabric store and you'll often be asked back: "Single or double?" You may have heard of double gauze but aren't sure how it differs from single gauze or what it's best for. Here's the whole picture in one read.
What is double gauze?
Double gauze is a cotton fabric made by weaving loosely-spun, open plain-weave gauze, then layering two sheets and bonding them at intervals into a single fabric. In Japanese it's called daburu gāze (二重ガーゼ).
Because two layers are combined, it has more loft and body than single gauze while staying light, breathable and absorbent. The trapped air layer keeps it cool in summer and warm in winter — an all-season material used for everything from baby items to apparel and bedding.
An easy rule: single = light and thin / double = soft and versatile / triple or more = thicker and warmer. Choose the number of layers by use and you won't go wrong.

Two tips before you sew
① Always pre-wash.
Gauze shrinks when wet. Soak once before cutting and straighten the grain while half-dry to prevent post-wash distortion.
② Prevent slippage.
The soft, stretchy hand shifts easily — use clips or temporary basting glue, a longer stitch length and a fine needle for thin fabrics. A French seam finishes cleanly and holds up to washing.
