Why We Print "Made in Taiwan" and Our Brand Name on the Selvedge
The selvedge is the tightly woven edge that keeps fabric from fraying.
On Greentex's Taiwan printed fabrics, we print our brand name and "Made in Taiwan" along it.
The selvedge tells you where the fabric came from
A roll of fabric is cut up and passes through several companies before it becomes a product. Invoices and boxes get separated along the way. The printing on the selvedge stays with the fabric.
With a brand name there, anyone can look up the maker online and knows who to contact.
Selling under your own name means taking responsibility for quality.
That is why our name is on the edge.
A blank selvedge gives you nothing to check
Plenty of solids and basic fabrics have nothing on the selvedge. That alone says nothing about quality.
Printed designs are different. A print is copyrighted artwork. If you make products from a print of unknown origin and a rights issue comes up later, you may have to pull them from sale.
If you are launching products under a brand, choose fabric whose source you can verify.
"Made in Taiwan" is not the origin of the finished product
Under Japan's Act against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations, the country of origin is where the "substantial transformation" took place. The Consumer Affairs Agency's guidelines give garments the country where they were sewn, and woven fabric the country where it was woven (or dyed, if dyed after weaving).
Taiwanese fabric sewn in Japan makes a product made in Japan. The "Made in Taiwan" on the selvedge describes the fabric.
It lets you tell your customers: "Taiwanese fabric, made up in Japan."
Greentex fabric
Every print is our own original, drawn by designers in Taiwan, and not sold through anyone else in Japan.
The brand name on the selvedge lets you check us online, so you can buy with confidence.
Existing prints come in 10 m rolls. Fully custom prints start at 100 m, with about two months' lead time. We also handle OEM from fabric to finished product.
FAQ
What is a selvedge?
The two finished edges of woven fabric that don't fray easily. Printed fabrics sometimes carry a brand name or origin there.
If the selvedge says Made in Taiwan, is the product made in Taiwan?
No. For garments, the country of origin is where they were sewn. Sewn in Japan means made in Japan.
Can the selvedge be used in the product?
It is usually cut off, because it can shrink slightly differently from the main fabric.
