What Is Oxford Fabric? Characteristics, Uses & Why It's Great for Printing
When you're looking for a substantial fabric for bags or school items, oxford is a name that always comes up. Plump and thick with a firm hand, durable, and with great print color, it's a staple cotton for handmade projects.
What is oxford
Oxford is a plain weave made by pairing two warp yarns and two weft yarns together (also called a basket weave). This two-by-two construction gives it a plump thickness and a moderate firmness. Thicker and sturdier than sheeting, yet easier to handle than canvas — that middle-ground workability is its charm. 100% cotton.

Q1. Oxford or sheeting — which should I choose?
For items that need to hold their shape (lesson bags, totes, pouches), choose firm oxford; for shirts and small bags where you want a lighter finish, choose sheeting. When in doubt: bags = oxford, small goods and clothing = sheeting.
Q2. Does it shrink in the wash? How do I care for it?
Cotton shrinks a little in the wash — that's the nature of the fiber, not a defect. Yarns are held under tension throughout weaving; when they absorb water the fibers swell, the tension relaxes, and the yarns return to their original length, so the fabric shrinks. As a guide, woven cotton shrinks around 3–5% (polyester barely moves). Countermeasures: pre-wash before cutting (soak, air-dry, press, then cut) for items that will be washed; avoid the tumble dryer — the biggest cause of shrinkage; and machine-wash in a laundry net on a gentle cycle.
Q3. Can I sew it on a home sewing machine?
Yes. Oxford is a medium-weight fabric, so a size 11 (75/11) needle with standard thread sews comfortably. Where layers stack up, such as handle bases, a size 14 (90/14) needle is safer.
Q4. Why is it the standard for school-entry items?
Three reasons: its thickness and firmness give a clean shape, it is durable enough for daily use, and its colors print crisply. Great for matching sets of lesson bags, shoe cases, and drawstring pouches.
