What Is Sheeting Fabric? Characteristics, Uses & Why It's Great for Printing

夜市グルメ柄 シーチング 実物|Greentex

Sheeting is a cotton plain weave made with yarn of around 20s count. It is neither thick nor thin, and it is the most widely used basic fabric, for home sewing and for shops making their own products alike.

What sheeting is like

The surface is matte, with the plain look of cotton. Prints come out in clear colour, so it pairs well with digital printing.

It is medium weight and easy to sew, which makes it a good first fabric for beginners. It is also reasonably priced, and being 100% cotton it suits things you use every day.

Compared with broadcloth and oxford

Both are plain weaves too. Broadcloth is densely woven, smooth, with a subtle sheen, and suits shirts and handkerchiefs. Oxford is woven with two yarns side by side in each direction, giving it body and stiffness for sturdy totes and goods.

Sheeting sits between them and works for shirts, small bags and accessories.

FAQ

Sheeting or broadcloth: which should I choose?

Broadcloth is smooth with a subtle sheen and looks neat. Sheeting is matte and looks more natural. Choose broadcloth for smart shirts, sheeting for relaxed clothing and small goods.

Is it easy for beginners to sew?

Yes. It is a medium-weight plain weave, so a size 11 needle and 60 thread work fine.

Does it shrink? Should I pre-wash it?

Being 100% cotton, it shrinks a little. Yarn held under tension during weaving relaxes back toward its original length when wet; for cotton wovens expect around 3–5%. For anything you will wash, soak it, dry it in the shade, iron it, then cut. Avoid tumble dryers, which cause the most shrinkage.

Can you do custom prints for novelties or OEM?

Yes. Existing Taiwan prints from 10 m, fully original designs from 100 m, in about two months. See Custom Orders.
