"Which fabric should a beginner start with?" — it's one of the most common questions among makers, and one answer is sheeting. It's the most common and easiest-to-use cotton staple: easy to sew, with excellent print color, so it's widely used for both handmade projects and original corporate production.
What is sheeting
Sheeting is a staple cotton fabric made from roughly 20-count yarn in a simple plain weave. Neither too thick nor too thin, it's the most manageable "standard plain weave" — which is exactly why it's so versatile. Its matte, natural look is distinctly cotton and has always been popular.

Q1. Sheeting or broadcloth — which should I choose?
Both are plain weaves: broadcloth is smooth with a light sheen and looks dressier, while sheeting is matte, natural, and casual. For a crisp shirt choose broadcloth; for natural-feel clothing and small goods choose sheeting.
Q2. Is it beginner-friendly?
Yes. It's the most common plain weave and not too thick — a size 11 (75/11) needle with standard thread sews comfortably. Great for a first project.
Q3. Does it shrink? Should I pre-wash?
Yes, a little — it's the nature of cotton. Yarns tensioned during weaving relax when they absorb water and return to their original length, so woven cotton shrinks around 3–5%. Pre-wash the fabric before cutting (soak, air-dry, press, then cut) and your finished item will keep its shape; avoid the tumble dryer.
