What Is Broadcloth? Features, vs. Sheeting & Oxford, and What to Make
When you want to sew a crisp, polished shirt or blouse, the first fabric on the list is broadcloth. In this guide, we look at what makes broadcloth special and how it differs from sheeting, oxford, and lawn—from a fabric supplier's point of view.
What Is Broadcloth?
Broadcloth is a plain-weave fabric woven from fine yarns at high density. The warp threads are packed in far more densely than the weft, creating very fine horizontal ribs across the surface. This tightness is what gives broadcloth its smooth hand and a subtle, natural sheen—nothing like the high shine of satin, which is a completely different (satin-weave) fabric. In Europe the same fabric is commonly called poplin. Long used for dress shirts and school shirts, it is truly "the shirt fabric."
What Makes Broadcloth Special

- Crispness and body—collars and cuffs stand beautifully. Perfect for pieces you want to finish sharp.
- Prints come out crisp—the tight weave reproduces fine patterns with sharp detail.
- Prone to wrinkles—100% cotton broadcloth assumes ironing. It comes with the territory of that polished look.

What to Make with Broadcloth
Dress shirts, blouses, shirt dresses, pajamas (smooth on the skin and better with every wash), smooth, skin-friendly linings, and uniforms or any piece that needs to look proper. If you want a rustic texture instead, choose oxford; for casual small items and prototypes, sheeting. Matching the fabric to the job is how the pros choose.

FAQ: Broadcloth
Q1. Are broadcloth and poplin the same fabric?
Essentially yes. The high-density plain-weave shirting called "broadcloth" in Japan and the US is generally called "poplin" in Europe. Both are woven with a dense warp, giving fine horizontal ribs and a subtle sheen. Broadcloth is a completely different fabric from satin, whose high shine comes from a satin weave.
Q2. Broadcloth or sheeting—which should I choose?
For polished garments like shirts and blouses, choose smooth broadcloth with its subtle sheen. For natural-feeling small items and prototypes, easy-to-handle sheeting. Both are plain weaves, but yarn fineness and density change the character completely.
Q3. Does it shrink? Does it wrinkle?
Being 100% cotton, it shrinks a little in the wash (woven cotton typically 3–5%). Pre-wash before cutting and avoid tumble dryers. High-density weaves also wrinkle more easily: shorten the spin cycle, shape the garment before hanging, and finish with an iron for that crisp broadcloth look.
Q4. Can I sew it on a home machine?
Yes. Broadcloth is light-to-medium weight, so a size 65/9–75/11 needle with standard thread works well. The tight weave keeps stitches stable, making it beginner-friendly for shirtmaking.
