Types of Gauze Fabric: Single, Double, or 6-Layer? How to Choose

Gauze is a cotton plain weave woven loosely from softly twisted yarn. The name comes from the German "Gaze", and it first spread as a medical fabric.

It breathes, absorbs water and feels soft. Air trapped in the weave makes it fluffier with every wash. It stays comfortable in summer, and layered up it traps air and keeps you warm in winter. The number of layers changes its character a lot, so here is how they differ.

Single gauze (1 layer)

The lightest and thinnest gauze. It is a little sheer but dries fastest. It suits handkerchiefs, bath cloths, summer swaddles and light inner layers. On its own it shows through easily and is not very strong.

Double gauze (2 layers)

Two layers tacked together at points: the most popular, standard type. It balances softness, ease of sewing and price, and works for anything from baby goods to dresses. More in our double gauze article.

Triple gauze (3 layers)

Three layers add another step of loft and warmth. The middle layer holds air, making it good for spring and autumn cover-ups, stoles, and bibs that need a little more thickness.

4 to 8 layers

The more layers, the closer it gets to a towel or blanket. Six-layer gauze baby blankets and sleep sacks are popular gifts for newborns in Japan. The extra thickness makes stacked seam allowances harder to sew on a home machine.

By project: single or double for handkerchiefs and bath cloths, double or triple for masks and bibs, double for baby clothes and dresses, triple for cover-ups and stoles, and 4 to 8 layers for blankets and sleep sacks.

Handling tips

Because the weave is loose, gauze shrinks noticeably in the first wash (around 3–5% is typical for cotton wovens). Before sewing, soak it well, dry it in the shade, and iron it while half dry, then cut.

The open weave shifts easily, so use plenty of pins and sew slowly. If the seams pucker, a finer needle (size 9–11) helps.

FAQ

How many layers are best for masks and bibs?

Double or triple, for a balance of softness and absorbency. For a more absorbent bib, use double gauze on the front and terry or batting on the back.

How much does gauze shrink in the wash?

Being 100% cotton, it shrinks in the first wash. That is a property of cotton, not a defect: the fibres swell when wet, the tension in the weave relaxes, and the yarn returns toward its original length. Expect around 3–5% for cotton wovens, sometimes a little more for loose gauze. Pre-wash anything you will launder (soak, dry in the shade, iron, then cut), and avoid tumble dryers, the biggest cause of shrinkage.

Is single gauze see-through?

Yes. You can see light through it, so for clothing, line it or choose double gauze. For handkerchiefs and bath cloths, the thinness is an advantage because it dries fast.

Does gauze really get softer with washing?

Yes. The yarn is softly twisted and loosely woven, so with repeated washing it swells, holds more air and becomes softer.
